Fresh off his leg-breaking crash at Mugello less than three months earlier, Valentino Rossi was still wearing a compression sock on his right leg during the Riders for Health charity auction at Indianapolis. Having gotten a little bored with taking portraits of riders standing around on stage, I had decided instead to aim the camera closer to eye level and happened to notice the mismatching socks. There is nothing technically or compositionally special about this photo, but it turned out to be my most unconventional snapshot of The Doctor.
